SPECIAL RECOGNITION: Excellence in Storytelling

The Barn is Burning

Carter J. Hellwarth

Celina, Ohio

Director's Statement:

"Although not situated too far into the past, the event covered in my documentary was an impactful crisis affecting a farm that is generations in the making. Although I was not able to be on-site the night of the fire, I knew soon after seeing the charred building that this story of rebirth and a determination to stay in a challenging industry would be great to share with others. Not only does the story of the barn’s fire have its inherent values and themes, but there is also the point that agriculture as a whole is commonly misunderstood in many ways by those who have not spent time in farming communities. Through this documentary, I hope to share an insight into the world of agriculture, provide an intriguing story about a family overcoming catastrophe, and deliver themes of perseverance and appreciation."

Quotes From Reviewers:

"Nicely done. This film feels like it is punching above its weight. It understands the structure of a story and starts with a hook, which it brings you back around to by the end. It also connects the smaller, niche story to a larger scale. Very well done and definitely relevant to the topic of 'On This Land.'"

"Brilliantly shot and powerful storytelling."

"This was an excellent film. The production quality is excellent, it does an excellent job telling a dynamic story. The message was clear and original. And the narrator/producer really does have a special skill for storytelling."
