Elizabeth Peratrovich: Trailblazer for America’s First Anti-Discrimination Act
Divya Kareena Thamman
Minneapolis, Minnesota

"I am very excited to share this documentary! I care about telling untold stories in history, especially about female trailblazers. In my research, I came across Elizabeth Peratrovich, a change maker whose bold activism and powerful words were critical in the passing of the United States’ first Anti-Discrimination Act. Although I am familiar with the Civil Rights Act, I had never heard of the United States’ first Anti-Discrimination Act, the Alaskan civil rights movement, or Elizabeth Peratrovich. This is what inspired and motivated me to tell this important story. The overall purpose and intent of this documentary was to help share this amazing story of bold action and transformative change, one that has been hidden from history books. In creating the documentary, one of the greatest joys and honors was to interview people close to her story. I wanted to better understand this history and felt so fortunate to be able to speak to Elizabeth’s granddaughter Betsy Peratrovich, Diane Benson (Tlingit Elder, Politician, Activist), and Annie Boochever, author of Elizabeth’s biography: Fighter in Velvet Gloves- Alaskan Civil Rights Hero. Elizabeth’s granddaughter Betsy said – “when there is discrimination occurring – every voice matter.” As a student from Minneapolis, Minnesota, especially given recent ICE events in my community, Betsy’s statement and Elizabeth’s bold actions serve as an inspiration – as throughout history and time, there is always the need to speak and think anew/act anew for a better future."
