Klamath Falls, Oregon

Director's Statement:
"Spirit Warrior tells the story of Native American veterans whose service to this nation is grounded in both sacrifice and cultural identity. Set during the nation’s 250th celebration of the Declaration of Independence, the documentary highlights the unique role Native veterans play in defending a country built upon their ancestral lands while maintaining deep ties to their heritage. The film centers on Joe Mike, a member of the Klamath Tribes and a 20-year military veteran. Through personal interviews, Joe reflects on the pride he felt serving his country and the challenges he faced during and after his time in uniform. His story reveals the emotional and physical struggles of military service, the transition back to civilian life, and the resilience required to carry both warrior and cultural responsibilities. Joe’s experience is part of a larger family legacy of military service spanning generations, dating back to World War II. Through his journey, Spirit Warrior honors the enduring warrior spirit of Native American veterans and explores the powerful intersection of history, service, and sovereignty—offering a vital perspective as the nation reflects on 250 years of independence."
Quotes from Reviewers:
"Informative and seamless narration. It's an important story from a perspective that is far too often not talked about enough - the sacrifices Native people have made to this land, especially when it comes to foundational beliefs we pride ourselves on in this country, and the history of Native people fighting in the nation’s military. Excellent and seamless use of Ken Burns effect. High level editing that brings together a tightly produced project. Job well done."
"The film effectively utilizes a mix of interview and archival sources to uplift the presence of Native veterans in the US Military. The film is grounded in research and a deep understanding of the topic and personalizes it with a single Native Veteran interview, along with a written script read by a tribal elder."
"There was a really good amount of archival footage and historic references. I really appreciated the topic of Native American History. Good integration of the theme. I enjoyed the pacing. The ending and the explanation of the Native staff and the meaning behind the design elements. This film was pieced together nicely. I would like to see a full length film, that's how much I enjoyed it."
