Join us Tuesday, January 19, 2027, at 7 p.m. CT for an exciting conversation with author Joshua Claybourn on his latest book Lincoln’s Compass: The Declaration of Independence and the American Idea.
Abraham Lincoln believed Jefferson meant what he wrote. That conviction shaped his politics, his speeches, and his understanding of the war he was asked to fight. Lincoln's Compass traces how Lincoln drew from the Declaration of Independence throughout his life — from his Indiana boyhood to the presidency — finding in Jefferson's words both an indictment of slavery and a measure of what America owed its people. Joshua Claybourn shows that Lincoln's attachment to the Declaration was constitutional, moral, and strategic. Published by Bloomsbury, Lincoln's Compass is for those who believe America's founding ideals still matter and must be reclaimed.
Joshua Claybourn is an attorney, historian, and Lincoln scholar rooted in southwestern Indiana, a few miles from where Abraham Lincoln spent his boyhood years. He serves as President of the Abraham Lincoln Association and holds board positions at the Abraham Lincoln Institute and the Lincoln Forum. He hosts the Lincoln Log podcast and is an Adjunct Scholar at the Cato Institute. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and USA Today, and he appeared in CNN's documentary "Lincoln: Divided We Stand." He practices law in Indiana, where he founded Shiloh Counsel LLC.
