Join us for the third installment of “Warning Signs: Lincoln’s Response to Rising Threats to Freedom, Justice, and Democracy.” This project, developed with generous support from Iron Mountain, draws on primary sources and experts to create new resources for the public to explore issues Abraham Lincoln witnessed—polarization, political violence, and more—and how he responded. Understanding history provides important context to challenges we face in our own time.
This program will feature screenings of “Warning Signs” film footage and a discussion with Lincoln scholar Dr. Jonathan White on Lincoln’s time in Congress and his politics, anti-Slavery efforts during this era, “Compromises” before 1850 and the Compromise of 1850 and misconceptions about our political institutions. The discussion will be followed by audience Q&A.
Jon White is the author or editor of twelve books, including Abraham Lincoln and Treason in the Civil War: The Trials of John Merryman (2011), and Emancipation, the Union Army, and the Reelection of Abraham Lincoln (2014), which was a finalist for both the Lincoln Prize and Jefferson Davis Prize, a “best book” in Civil War Monitor, and the winner of the Abraham Lincoln Institute’s 2015 book prize.
