Join us for a special presentation featuring former Ambassador Paolo Rondelli speaking about the history behind the unique relationship between Abraham Lincoln and San Marino. This event is co-sponsored by Lincoln Presidential Foundation, Loyola University Chicago's Office of Global and Community Engagement, and the National Italian-American Foundation.
The Ambassador will lead the event by describing the alliance between President Lincoln and San Marino, the oldest constitutional republic in the world. During the American Civil War, San Marino proposed a republican alliance with the United States, and its government made American President Abraham Lincoln an honorary citizen.
Paolo Rondelli has served San Marino as Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, and as one of two Captains Regent in San Marino, becoming the world’s first openly gay head of state. He is currently serving as an Adjunct Professor to Link University Campus in Rome and a PhD Candidate at Università Statale in Milan in Historical Studies.
